The History of Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week was set-up in 1958 as part of the Big Four fashion weeks, which include New York, Paris, and London. The fashion weeks move between these four cities, which are widely regarded as the fashion capitals of the world. The first fashion week is in New York, then it moves to London, then Milan, then Paris.

Italy’s designer fashion industry is one of the biggest in the world, and Milan is a hub for Italian fashion. Milan Fashion Week owes a big part of its success to the National Chamber for Italian Fashion (Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana). This is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of Italian fashion industry and it pulls out all the stops each year, ensuring that Milan Fashion Week more than competes with the other members of the Big Four.

One thing that makes Milan Fashion Week particularly special is the huge roster of Italian designer labels who show up to strut their stuff. If you attend this year’s MFW, you can expect to see the following big names: Fendi, Versace, Gucci, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, and Ferragamo… and the list goes on!

Milan Fashion Week Shows

Most of the shows and events at the MFW are industry-exclusive, as they are reserved for buyers and press interested in covering the events. You can potentially register with the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, but you’ll probably need some kind of press credentials and a registered publication backing you. But even if you can’t get into the official shows, there are after parties and crowds of people around all of the events.

Holidaying in Milan During Fashion Week

With over 40 different fashion shows taking place each Milan Fashion Week, the entire city transforms into a fashionista’s dream! Many locations throughout the city are transformed during the event, including the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) and The Palazzo Serbelloni. Milan is an incredible city at any time of year, but it’s particularly special during either of its fashion weeks!
